A lot of English culture and history for TTO-pupils during Canterbury trip

After a sunny crossing to England on Thursday 25th April, we unfortunately arrived at a slightly foggy Dover without the expected spectacular view of the chalk cliffs.

Having left Dover, the weather turned sunny again so we had a lovely afternoon in Canterbury.

First part of the programme was a visit to the Canterbury Tales where the pupils listened to some of the stories told by the pelgrims. Final story of the tour was about the murder of Thomas Becket, archbishop of Canterbury.

After visiting the Canterbury Tales, the group split up. One group started with the Historic River Cruise during which the pupils were told a lot about the history of Canterbury. The other group had some free (shopping) time.

At about six o’clock we returned to our bus where François (you can call me ‘çois’) was waiting for us. It took us almost an hour to get to Ashford where the host families were waiting for us.

The pupils had supper and spent the evening at their host families. One of the assignments was having an interview with at least one of the family members.

On Friday morning we assembled at 8 o’clock and headed back for Canterbury. Since it was raining, we were happy that the morning programme was taking place at Marlowe Theatre, where the pupils followed two drama workshops and were taken on a guided theatre tour.

After a short break for lunch, we were received by two guides at Canterbury cathedral . The pupils were to take notes during the tour which they could use for their report about the cathedral.

At two o’clock we left Canterbury. We arrived in Weert at 22.30 pm.

The trip to Canterbury was a short but intense acquaintance with the English culture and history, which has been a very educational experience for the TTO-pupils.
