Philips van Horne organises regional round of Junior Speaking Contest

TTO-pupils of 8 schools in Brabant and Limburg participated in this contest on March 10: College Den Hulster Venlo, Porta Mosana College Maastricht, Pius X-College Bladel, Charlemagne College Eijkhagen, Sondervick College Veldhoven, Bisschoppelijk College Broekhin Roermond, Jan van Brabant College Helmond and Philips van Horne SG Weert.

 

Subject of this year was 'My passion is ... '.

The interpretation of this subject varied from 'No passion at all to helping children in need'.

Rules & Regulations:

A speech should last between 3 and 4 minutes. Participants are not allowed to read their speeches from paper. However they are allowed to use index cards with key word. No other aids or props are allowed. So no technical devices, musical instruments, notebooks etc. After 3.5 minutes a flag will be raised by the time-keeper, which means that a speaker has 30 seconds left. Ik the contestant has not finished after 4 minutes, the time-keeper will sound the gong to indicate that time is over. After the speech a contestant will have to answer 3 questions relating to his/her speech. The questions are asked by the members of the jury.

 

Mr Onno van Wilgenburg (European Platform) who acted as time-keeper, Mr Leon Heuvelmans (Local Council Weert), Mrs Fiona Macdonald (British Council Amsterdam) and Mr Arnold Augustijn (Anglia Network Europe).

 

After 16 interesting speeches, the jury was most impressed by Laurens Jansen's passion for life (Carpe diem!) and Sirra Alofs's musical aspirations. These two pupils will be representing their schools (Sondervick College Veldhoven and Porta Mosana Maastricht) at the National round on March 30. The other contestants all received a microphone trophy and a JSC-certificate.
